How much does a fence cost installed?

Drag the length slider from 20 to 400 linear feet, pick a material — pressure-treated wood at $32–46 per foot, cedar, vinyl, chain link, aluminum or composite up to $115 — then set the height, add gates, and flag tear-out or sloped ground. The estimate updates as an installed total: the default 120 ft, 6 ft pressure-treated run with one gate works out to $4,220–6,200, about $39 per linear foot before the gate.

Common questions

What does fencing cost per linear foot?

Chain link is the budget option at $22–34 per linear foot installed. Pressure-treated wood runs $32–46, cedar $48–72, vinyl or PVC $58–88, aluminum $62–98, and composite tops the range at $75–115. Those rates assume a standard 6 ft height.

How much does fence height change the price?

The calculator prices 6 ft as the baseline. Dropping to 4 ft takes about 18% off the per-foot rate, while going up to 8 ft adds 28% — taller panels mean more material and deeper posts.

What does a gate add?

Each gate adds $380–680 on top of the per-foot fence price, covering the frame, hardware and hanging. The calculator lets you price up to six, and driveway-width gates land at the top of that range.

Do I need a permit for a fence?

Often, depending on your municipality and the height. Fence permits and property-line surveys are quoted separately from this estimate — treat the calculator's number as the build cost and confirm local rules before the postholes go in.
